The ROADTIRE Project

Budget : Life+ 09ENV
Duration : 24 months
Participants : 4 partners from 2 EU Member States
ETRA contact : Ir. Costis Keridis

The objective of the ROADTIRE project is to demonstrate an innovative use for recycled tyre rubber in road construction. The ROADTIRE pilot involves laying a road surface using asphalt mixes modified with recycled tyre rubber. Approximately 6,000 m2 of an urban road in Lamia will be covered by a 5-cm upper-circulation layer made of the demonstration material, which will also be determined by various laboratory and field tests.

ROADTIRE aims to promote the use of EOL tyres in road construction and maintenance in an integrated and console-dated way. It focuses in Greece and Italy, thus adapting mostly on Mediterranean settings. The approach involves the development and construction of a pilot road to prototype and demonstrate innovative related methodologies in order to raise barriers that still hinder the massive valorization of EOL-tyres into such engineering applications. ROADTIRE will develop an integrated methodology to facilitate the integration of EOL-tyres into the entire road life cycle.
