Anagennisis Project: concrete applications of Recycled Tyre Materials
Final Management Meeting in Sheffield
The 7th and final management meeting of the Anagennisis Project, funded by the European Commission under FP7, was held on Tuesday 30 May 2017 at the Diamond Building of Sheffield University. The meeting was the occasion for all of the partners to present the most recent updates of the research results, and summarise the three and a half years of activities.
ETRA is one of the project partners and the leader of the various dissemination activities to spread awareness within the concrete and building sector, and, to create opportunities for the tyre recycling industries to take an active role in this new material sector.
Research has demonstrated that the inclusion of recycled tyre materials (RTMs) in the concrete mix has the capacity to improve performance on various scales. In addition to improving performance in different types of applications - the addition of RTMs also increases the overall sustainability of the application.
Due to the slowing of many construction programmes during the recent economic crisis, the volume of concrete produced and used decreased enormously. Nonetheless, concrete / cement is still one of the largest industries, worldwide. The benefits of RTMs, even as the sector is slowly returning to pre-crisis levels, represents a potentially huge market opportunity for tyre recyclers and their materials, that are accepted as key elements to innovate a traditional product like concrete.
The good results of the projects form an important, massive, block of knowledge and experience, that will be used in the follow-up of the project to expand awareness and promote the use of RTMs in the building sector.
Tyres are produced from vulcanised rubber reinforced with high-strength corded steel wire and polymer textile fibres. Rubber extracted from tyres through mechanical shredding is a highly durable, strong and flexible material. This makes it an ideal aggregate to produce highly-deformable strong concrete, but its lateral dilation damages concrete. Steel/polymer fibres of specified dimensions can also be recycled and used in concrete for shrinkage crack control, but there is a lack of efficient processes to clean, sort and classify these fibres.

The principal goal of the Anagennisis project was to develop innovative solutions to reuse all tyre by-products in high-value innovative concrete applications with reduced environmental impact. This has been achieved by developing the following :
- novel highly-deformable confined rubberised concrete materials, and recycle steel and wire reinforcement for concrete applications.
- highly-deformable RC elements using rubberised concrete and recycled fibres suitable for integral bridge elements and base isolation systems for vibration/seismic use.
- Reused Tyre Steel Fibre (RTSF) concrete mixes for use in slabs-on-grade, precast concrete, sprayed concrete and screeds.
- Reused Tyre Polymer Fibre (RTPF) concrete mixes for shrinkage crack control in concrete elements, precast concrete, sprayed concrete and screeds.
- and undertaking at least five mini-Demonstration Projects in several countries using the developed materials/applications.
- and implementing standardised design guidelines and life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCAA) protocols.
Anagennisis has provided:

ETRA is the leader of dissemination activities and has successfully provided a broad array of communications and awareness materials that inform the concrete industry, Public Authorities and other end users about the innovative options offered by this programme.
