The Conference Theme : Tyre Recycling A European Industry

The theme of the 11th Annual Conference draws from the recognition that during the last de-cade tyre recycling emerged as a commercially viable, environmentally sound industry in Europe. Tyre recycling fulfils a strategic Community goal towards sustainable development by transforming a priority waste stream into a valuable resource which yields a broad range of cost-effective materials that are used in an expanding array of civil engineering, construc-tion and rehabilitation applications as well as myriad industrial and consumer products.
After an introduction to the status of tyre recycling in the Member and Candidate States, the sessions will focus on a specific sector of the market – the materials, applications and/or products – or demonstrate how you can participate in the opportunities still available in this multi-sectoral, dynamic industry.

BUILDING ON 11 YEARS OF TYRE RECYCLING IN THE EU

About the Conference Sponsors
ETRA, the European Tyre Recycling Association, is the only European organisation devoted exclusively to tyre and rubber recycling. Initiated on 21 January 1994 as a result of the ETRA conference, officially registered on 23 September 1994 with 19 members in 5 countries, ETRA now has ±250 members in 46 countries including each of the 15 Member States and the majority of Candidates.

ETRA membership reflects both the public and private sectors involved in the environ-mentally sound disposition of post-consumer tyres. Policy and decision makers as well as those charged with organising and connecting the links in the valorisation chain are represented. With a focus on both material and energy recovery ETRA members inclu-ude collectors, manufacturers of recycling equipment, research and training institut-ions, project and product developers, as well as those who process post-consumer tyres into standardised materials and those who use those materials in an expanding array of products and applications.

The Mission of the association is to formalise Tyre Recycling as an independent, multi-sectoral industry involved in a long chain of activities which protect the environment and enhance the quality of life. This is accomplished through a focused advocacy and co-operative actions to improve professional standards and to develop quality guide-lines for products and materials. A principal goal is to assist in the realisation of cost-effective as well as environmentally sound tyre recycling projects and programmes.

The mechanisms include exchanges of information and experience at conferences, seminars, workshops and study tours as well as with printed materials including a quarterly newsletter, monographs, reports, etc., which discuss new and advanced technologies, collection and sorting systems, funding sources, and job availability, as well as problems, issues and pitfalls. Study groups are formed on current topics of interest and concern to the industry and provide direct assistance to members about efficient systems of tyre recycling.

ETRA is recognised by the European Commission as the organisation representing tyre recycling in Europe and participated in the EU Recycling Forum and in the prep-aration of the UNEP Basel Convention ‘Guideline for the identification and manage-ment of used tyres’. In 2000, ETRA initiated a CEN Workshop Agreement for the standardisation of post-consumer tyre materials and representative applications. The final CWA was published in May 2002. and evolved to prEN14243 in November 2002. The Swedish Standards Institute is the Secretariat of the Technical Body that is contin-uing the work towards an EN.

ETRA members subscribe to a ‘Sustainable Development Charter’ for the environmen-tally sound management of post-consumer tyres.

The study tour includes visits to a minimum of four tyre recycling facilities in Northern France, Belgium and Holland. It offers an opportunity to see various recycling processes in actual operation. Participants have an opportunity to meet with company staff, ask ques-tions and discuss the marketplace. Meals, snacks and over-night accommodation are included.

Wednesday : Pre-conference activities
Recyclers’ Speak-out

Scheduled just prior to the General Assembly Meeting, it is an open forum for informal discussion among the delegates concerning the current status of the industry and the issues that are being confronted by recyclers and users. Issues addressed during the speak-out may be presented at the General Assembly Meeting for further discussion and action.

The Annual General Assembly Meeting : The GAM is an opportunity for ETRA members to take an active role in developing short and long term association policies and objectives and to have a say in the activities and research that will be pursued during the coming year. New research projects will be proposed. Officers are elected  to lead the organisation through the next three years.
Other activities during the week

The Technology Forum :In its 11th year, the forum opens the floor to participants to discuss innovations they have introduced and the issues/obstacles they have overcome along the way. Many technologies which are currently entering the mainstream were first introduced during these sessions.

The Exhibition :In its fourth year, the Exhibition is open throughout the conference with 15 stands and display areas sponsored by material producers and users, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Conference receptions and coffee breaks are offered in the Exhibition area.

The Poster Show : The show includes brief displays of innovative developments in the field which may also be presented and discussed during the Technology Forum. Viewing is throughout the conference period.
 Saturday : Post-conference activities

ETRA Working Groups : Working groups investigate specific topics of critical interest to the industry. Current groups include : Definition of the paramenters of post-consumer tyre materials, the definition of waste, new markets, roads and sport surfaces. Group 1 will prepare a research proposal for the study of zinc oxide leachates. Pre-registration is required for participation in the project
